A case of urban integration: Vienna's port area and the Ottoman merchants in the eighteenth century

AbstractStudying the Ottoman subjects in eighteenth-century Vienna helps to understand better the process of integration of the different districts of the city in a fast-changing context, especially around its Danube port area. Despite the withdrawal of the Ottoman empire from central Europe after 1683, Ottomans were fully a part of the history of Vienna and their presence has to be explored within the specific urban dynamics of a city: the reconfiguration of its economic sectors and social places, the tensions at play between the socio-economic groups by which a city was made and the evolution of its urban planning. Focusing on the Ottoman merchants operating in Vienna allows us to identify and to analyse the workings of the port area of the fourth largest city in Europe and to explore the social spaces of Viennese markets, streets, courtyards and coffeehouses.

In: Revue d'histoire moderne et contemporaine, Band 61-1, Heft 1, S. 123-146

The Ottoman empire in early modern Austrian history : assessment and perspectives
This paper discusses the over-focalisation on the Mediterranean area of historians of the early modern Euro-Ottoman relationship and it offers a critical assessment of the numerous studies conducted by historians of the Habsburg Monarchy over thirty years. It shows that the histories of the Austrian monarchy and of the Ottoman Empire were interdependent and that war is a marginal element in their relationship. This paper emphasises the political use of the Ottoman history by Austrian scholars from Hammer-Purgstall's essential enterprise to the violent contestation of Samuel Huntington and his civilizational pattern. Cultural history, trade and diplomacy appear as the three ways of the Austrian historiographical shift, which nevertheless calls nowadays for a more pragmatic approach.

; History of Ottoman merchants trading in early modern Central Europe is usually divided in particular community historiographies based on national and ethno-religious patterns. Studying them, according to the political protection allowed by the Sultan and respected by the Holly Roman Emperor on his own-estates, enables to figure out the stakes and the advantages to be a Turkish subject abroad and especially in the Austrian monarchy. Moreover, the national and religious categories singled out of the Hofkammer's materials resulted from a late confessionnalisation lead by the Imperial administration that is very basic in the early modern German history. Yet, Muslim, Jewish, Armenian or Greek merchants from the Ottoman Empire, running their busyness in the 18th-century Vienna, are characterized by a same way of trade. Studying the entire Ottoman group reveals that, through a set of economic and political strategies, the Ottoman merchants modify the Austrian law to their benefit and to the detriment of the bourgeoisie of Vienna and its commercial monopoly.
